KRUSCHEV:

Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev (1894 – 1971) was the leader of the Soviet Union as First Secretary of the Communist Party from 1953 to 1964 and as chairman of the country's Council of Ministers from 1958 to 1964.

Relevance to 1956:

In 1956 Nikita Kruschev (1894-1971) made his famous Secret Speech, in which he criticised the repressive actions of Stalin and the cult of personality. The speech was part of the “Kruschev Thaw”. Repression and censorship in the Soviet Union were relaxed, and millions of political prisoners were released from Gulag labour camps due to Khrushchev's policies of de-Stalinization and peaceful coexistence with other nations. The term was coined after Ilya Ehrenburg's 1954 novel The Thaw, sensational for its time.

The Thaw initiated irreversible transformation of the entire Soviet society by opening up for some economic reforms and international trade, educational and cultural contacts, festivals, books by foreign authors, foreign movies, art shows, popular music, dances and new fashions, and massive involvement in international sport competitions. As the power struggle between pro-Khrushchevists and pro-Stalinists never stopped, it eventually weakened the Soviet Communist Party.

The Thaw allowed some freedom of information in the media, arts, and culture; international festivals; foreign films; uncensored books; and new forms of entertainment on the emerging national TV, ranging from massive parades and celebrations to popular music and variety shows, satire and comedies, and all-star shows. Such political and cultural updates altogether had a significant influence on the public consciousness of several generations of people in the Soviet Union.

Leonid Brezhnev, who succeeded Khrushchev, put an end to the Thaw.

Some Kruschev comments:

  • On a visit to the US in 1959, Kruschev met Shirley Maclaine on set whilst she was filming Can Can and was hosted lunch by Frank Sinatra. However, his mood changed when he was barred from visiting Disneyland, ostensibly for security reasons.

“And I say, ‘I would very much like to go and see Disneyland.’ But then, we cannot guarantee your security, they say. Then what must I do? Commit suicide? …

“We have come to this town where lives the cream of American art. And just imagine, I a premier, a Soviet representative, when I came here to this city, I was given a plan — a program of what I was to be shown and whom I was to meet here. But just now I was told that I could not go to Disneyland. I asked: ‘Why not?’ What is it, do you have rocket-launching pads there?’ I do not know.

“And just listen — just listen to what I was told — to what reason I was told. We, which means the American authorities, cannot guarantee your security if you go there. What is it? Is there an epidemic of cholera there or something? Or have gangsters taken over the place that can destroy me? Then what must I do? Commit suicide? This is the situation I am in — your guest. For me the situation is inconceivable. I cannot find words to explain this to my people.”

  • Sinatra, who was seated next to Mrs. Khrushchev, leaned over to actor David Niven and said, “Tell the old broad you and I will take ’em down there this afternoon.” (A State Department official said later that Mrs. Khrushchev and her daughters were welcome to tour Disneyland, but that she decided to remain with her husband.)
  • Speaking of Mrs Kruschev, Nikita Kruschev was once asked what it would have meant if he had been shot instead of President Kennedy. He replied "The main difference for the history of the world if I had been shot rather than Kennedy is that Onassis probably wouldn't have married Mrs Krushchev."

  • The news of Kennedy’s assassination sent shockwaves across the entire world, including the Soviet Union. General Secretary Nikita Khrushchev was awakened by an aide with the words: “Kennedy’s been killed!” According to some accounts, the first thing he asked was: “Did we have anything to do with it?”
  • In the book Nikita Khrushchev: Reformer, the memoirs of the Soviet leader’s son, Sergey Khrushchev states that his father fell to his knees and sobbed over the killing.
  • During his rule, Khrushchev stunned the communist world with his denunciation of Stalin's crimes and his de-Stalinization. He sponsored the early Soviet space program, and enactment of relatively liberal reforms in domestic policy. After some false starts, and a narrowly avoided nuclear war over Cuba, he conducted successful negotiations with the United States to reduce Cold War tensions. His tendency toward recklessness led the Kremlin leadership to strip him from power, replacing him with Leonid Brezhnev as First Secretary and Alexei Kosygin as Premier.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

FUNNY FRIDAY

 -----o😊o-----

Welcome to another Funny Friday readers, let's see if we can raise some spirits and produce some smiles.

Some risque content ahead.

-----o😊o-----

SOME HUMOUR:

A married couple leaves a formal event. He's in a tuxedo, she's in a gown. He's been drinking. He starts the car but doesn't put on his seat belt.

"Please, darling," the wife says, "you've been drinking. Put on your seat belt." "Not when I'm wearing a tuxedo," he says.

They drive to an intersection. Across from them is a police car.

"He's going to see you're not wearing your seat belt," she says."Nonsense," he says.

The light turns green and the cop pulls them over. The husband hurriedly fastens on his seat belt.

'Sir, were you wearing that seat belt a moment ago?" asks the cop.

"Of course I was."

"Ma'am," the cop says, "do you recall if he was wearing his seatbelt?"

"Oh, I couldn't say," the wife replies. "It's best not to argue with him when he's been drinking."

When I was about 9 years old, I accompanied my father to the funeral of a friend of his, someone who I didn't even know. When we got there, I stayed in a corner waiting for the time to pass. Then a man approached me and said, 'Enjoy life kid, be happy because time flies. Look at me now, I didn't enjoy it.' Then he passed his hand over my head and left. My father, before leaving, forced me to say goodbye to the dead person. When I looked in the coffin, I was horrified to see that the man in the coffin was the same man who had spoken to me! I was so traumatized I couldn't sleep properly. I had terrible nightmares. I was terrified of being alone. I couldn't sleep without a night light for many years. I saw many shrinks, endured much turmoil throughout my adolescent years. It got better as I aged, but I would still occasionally wake up screaming in fear. Years later, I discovered something incredible that changed my life.

The dead fellow had a twin.

A movie theatre in my town was recently robbed of over $20,000 of merchandise

FROM THE VAULT:

It’s Friday night and a young woman gets chatting with a handsome army sergeant in a bar.

After a couple of drinks she asks: “So when was the last time you slept with a real woman then?”

A little taken aback, the sergeant replies “Let’s see...that would have been about 2015”.

With that, the woman takes him home for a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Afterwards she exclaims: “Well sergeant...for somebody who hasn’t had sex since 2015 you certainly haven’t forgotten anything!”.

The man looks at his watch and says: “I should hope not, it’s only 2230!”

-----o😊o-----

LIMERICK OF THE WEEK:

"Now really, young man, you're a bore,"
Said a Lady Priscilla van Blore.
"I'm covered with sweat
And you haven't come yet
And my God - it is quarter past four!"

Bonus limerick, in the same vein:

A rabbi from far-off Peru
was desperately trying to screw.
His wife said, “Oy vey!
If you keep on this way
the Messiah will come before you.”

CORN CORNER:

I have a lot of jokes of unemployed people
But none of them work...

I’ve started to invest in stocks.
Beef, chicken, and vegetable.
One day I hope to be a bouillonaire.

I gave this homeless guy $5 and an old lady behind me told me he's just going to use it for drugs, so I confronted him and asked where I could get drugs for $5 too.

QUOTE FOR THE DAY

REAL ESTATE STORIES

The below article recounting what real estate agents in South Australia have discovered on property inspections comes from the pages of real estate.com at:

Before posting the article, let me set out a couple of anecdotes of which I am aware:

--------o😊o--------

I acted for a client who was renting a garage in which he stored materials and items. He came to see me after he was away for some time and fell behind in his rent. An agent failed to go through required proceedings to get an eviction order, instead simply taking everything to the tip. The problem with this was that the tenant was an artist and the items tipped were his art works. I made a claim and the agent rang me, saying “Works of art my arse. That was rusted shit welded together.”

When the failure to follow required procedure was relied upon, the agent elected to settle out of court.

--------o😊o--------

Someone I know carried out a property inspection and was surprised to find that the apartment was filled with camp beds.

It turned out that the tenant was renting out the beds on 8 hour shits for ethnic workers.

--------o😊o--------

Another agent I know told me that he had gone to a house for a property inspection and found the door open.

A knock was not answered and he entered. As he walked past the bedroom, also with the door open, he noticed a couple hard at it.

I asked “So what did you do?”

He replied “I walked back out as silently as I could and went back another day.”

The naked truth: SA real estate agents recount their weirdest property stories

Tom Bowden

29 May 2021

Conducting a house sale should be a fairly straightforward process. But that’s not always the case, as we discovered in speaking to local agents. Here’s a selection of some of their more unusual experiences.
________________

About 23 years ago, I was a fresh faced 20-year-old property manager and had to use a bailiff to physically remove tenants from a property. Once I gained access to the home, I found the front bedroom’s walk-in robe full of rolled up towels, 20L containers of massage oil, sex toys in all sorts of shapes and sizes and boxes of condoms. The most interesting surprise was when I opened the door to the roof space and attached to the rafters were eye bolts and an array of whips and chains.

Elle Whyatt, Klemich Real Estate
________________

I went to an open inspection at a property I hadn’t been to before, but the keys didn’t work at the front door. I tried the back and got in. I was sitting waiting for prospective tenants to arrive when I heard people speaking outside. I looked out and saw about four or five groups outside the vacant property where I should have been. I was sitting in the wrong property! The back door key fitted both properties! Good job nobody was home and nobody came home.

________________

A potential buyer was speaking to my wife, Angela, who was also the selling agent on the property.
“You are not the girl in the video!”
“Yes I am.”
“No, the girl in the video looks so much younger. You look so old in real life.”

Michael Stentiford, Ouwens Casserly Real Estate

Doing a routine inspection I knocked on a bedroom door and opened it. There, in all his glory, was a very nice looking young man totally naked on the bed asleep with the overhead fan going!

I sold a property in Fullarton recently. I sold it off market and it was just land value so I didn’t go inside the property. After it had sold, I was told it was a brothel and a quick Google search confirmed it.

Millie Campion, Harris Real Estate
________________

I recall doing a routine inspection in my formative PM years, the tenants were avid horror fans and had ‘decorated’ the interior of the property with all sorts of odd paraphernalia. The bathroom had a floor mat with fake blood footprints, the shower curtain had fake blood splatters imprinted on it. The bedroom walls had removable decals that were also fake blood splatters. They had intended to spook their property manager, however they clearly underestimated the intestinal fortitude of an experienced PM campaigner that had witnessed the horrors of unwashed months-old dishes in sinks, unflushed soiled toilets, questionable carpet stains and half-eaten Dominos pizza crusts strewn across the living room.

Michael Nikou, Turner Real Estate
________________

One day I went to an open of an unoccupied home only to find someone sleeping on the lounge. He said the owners were letting him stay a few days, I then told him to clean up his mess and make the bed as I had an open in 15 minutes. When I discovered the smashed window in the bathroom alarm bells started to ring and I tried to call the police but couldn’t remember the 13 number. Long story short – he escaped and when the police arrived they said in that situation ring 000.

Kristy Dundon, Harris Real Estate

I took a very conservative landlady to a routine inspection where the tenant’s friend was wandering around half naked with loud porn on the TV in the lounge.

The vendors of a property I was selling knew that I’m a “sweet freak” and always left some sweets out for me to enjoy during the open – lollies and chocolates in a bowl. One day I chose to indulge in a Clinker or two. The vendors returned after the open and before we sat down to discuss the outcome of the inspection, I disclosed that I enjoyed a couple of the Clinkers they’d left out for me. They said “You didn’t!? Oh no, we were going to throw them out after the open!” because their huge, drooling Turner & Hooch style dog had ran his tongue over them when they were walking him before the open started. Let’s just say, I will never indulge in a non-wrapped chocolate or lolly again.

One of my favourites was when my manager and I discovered an owner sunbaking topless outside on the mezzanine, which was also a prohibited area. We thought it was a dead body at first! I had to climb over the railing to get to the owner to wake her up! That was a funny day. The owner didn’t even seem to mind I had seen her naked!

Rachel Chappell, Turner Real Estate
________________

I was selling a property in Frewville about 20 years ago and it was an old, empty home, and the vendor was a really big burly guy with a big beard. He warned me that there were ghosts in the house and that when they were cleaning up they felt these presences in there. I would go in and host the open and when I was finished I’d turn off all the lights and open up the curtains, and when I got in the car to drive off, lights would come on and curtains would be pulled closed, despite there was being no one living in the house. It was so creepy. In the end the vendor had a choice between selling it to a young family who was going to renovate it or a developer who was going to knock it down, and the vendor went with the developer because he couldn’t bear the thought of putting a family through that.

I was about to conduct an open and the tenants were following me into an apartment building in the city. But I slipped before getting to the door – where everyone could see – and my wraparound skirt became caught on something. The skirt then fell off and I was left standing with only a g-string on below the waist.

I had an appraisal at 1 Smith Street. I turned up to the house, which was on a corner and I knocked on the door. The door opened and I introduced myself, “Hi Gary, Richard Hayward”, and Gary said “Hi Richard” and let me in. I walked through the home, popped my stuff down on the kitchen table and made some idle chitchat. “Where do I know you from Richard?”, he asked. We chatted and I thought maybe we’d crossed paths when I was on the local council. A few minutes went by and finally Gary said “So, what are you doing here Richard?”, and I said “I’m here to appraise your home”. He looked at me strangely and said: “I didn’t organise to have my home appraised, you must mean the other Gary, who owns the house on the other corner, of Smith Court, not Smith Street”. What are the chances of me rocking up to the wrong house, on a corner, on the same named street, with the owner with the same name?

Richard Hayward, Klemich Real Estate
________________

A tenant answered the door for a routine wearing an oversized nightie. The twin children were not home and there was a car out the front I didn’t recognise. I went to open the walk-in robe and the tenant quickly stood between me and the door (still in her nightie) saying that it was too messy in there and she would rather I didn’t go in. I am convinced that there was a person in there and it wasn’t her husband. Anyway, a short time later the marriage broke up and now she is a mum of five kids to the new guy.

Charmaine Homes, Turner Real Estate
________________

When I first started, I was selling a property in the Hills where they had a pet cockatoo in a cage at the front door of the house. We ended up having to remove him because people would turn up at the door and come inside to have a look, and this cockatoo would either whistle at them or loudly tell them: “You’re ugly!” He would decide who he was happy to allow to come into the house, and then scream rather loudly at people he didn’t like.

We have a long-term tenant and every Halloween he likes to put on a show – he waits for the staff member to arrive and loves it when it’s a new one. He then follows them around as they do the inspection to wait for their reaction! Last year’s effort involved spiders, crime scene tape, and a skeleton. But the bathroom was where he went all out, with a brain in a tray, crime scene markers, fake blood and a realistic-looking garbage bag-wrapped body in the bath. At first the team were pretty freaked out by his pranks and really worried about him, but over the years, we’ve played along, assuring new staff that he’s fine, he might just have a surprise for you!

A few years back I had a lady ask if I could take her to my next open inspection as her partner had to head off to another appointment. We had a lovely drive and chat on the way to my next open – it’s all part of the service.

Back in my good old property management days I conducted a routine inspection at a small townhouse. The property was immaculate, but when I went to check the small courtyard I came face-to-face with a full-size white horse.

QUOTES FOR THE DAY

THE ART OF ARD

Thanks to Graham E for drawing my attention to Ard Gelinck . . .

Ard Gelinck is a Dutch artist who has been posting ’then and now’ images of celebrities since 2017 – well known people with their younger selves. What is striking is that the images appear as the 2 people alongside each other having been posed and photographed live. The other thought comes to mind is that it is a stark reminder of the aging process and impermanence.

DESIGN FAILS

Some of these designs are awful to look at, others are possibly fatal. How could they have been thought of, much less constructed? How many hands and eyes did they have to go through before being completed?

The following are from Bored Panda with the original headings and some of the reader comments following each pic. Often the reader comments are the best part.

My Uncle's House Got A Bathroom Without A Door, Literally The First Thing You See When You Enter The House

Welcome to our humble commode...I meant abode

The aroma in the house must be marvellous.

Well, it's always kind of awkward to ask where the bathroom is when you're a guest in a new house. So, he's just making sure you know as soon as you walk in. Considerate.

I do not think an interior designer had anything to do with this. Looks more like an amateur job. Nothing matches (floor, glass blocks, toilet) and no designer would place a wall of glass blocks standalone in a space like that.

Those glass bricks... reminds me of SANIFAIR (toilets at gas stations along German highways)

Oh yes. Yikes!

Crappy design

I am speechless...

What is this, a daycare?

That is shitty feng shui!

My Friend's Under-The-Stairs "Bathroom" Where The Toilet Is Diagonal And Partially Installed Into The Carpeted Wall

This is beyond weird

I'm thinking bad things happen in here.

I can smell this picture

The legend says it was a white carpet at the beginning..

Ew!

It looks like somewhere the unsub in Criminal Minds would keep his next victim.

That was exactly what I first thought. Definite creepy pervert serial killer vibes going on.

Is this a bathroom or a cell?

Well, if something (somehow) accidently ends up against the wall, no one will notice.

Harry would have been a lot more messed up if he had lived here

The wall is slowly digesting the toilet, and everybody sitting on it

Screw the toilet being wonky who in the world carpets wall?

Why couldn't they put it against the back wall?! And what's with the carpet!?! This was designed for a hostage, not an "extra bathroom".... Where's the sink!? Lol what were they thinking?!?!? 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

For the shy pooper who doesn't want guests hearing what's happening.

That's some great sound proofing.

Like a poop grotto.

Can't Stop Thinking About This Sink

Why???? Even the microwave is shocked

So they measured wrong and thought sod it?

i like it...

I like it too

The 2020 Hip Bruiser model

The sink is trying to escape.

Two people can wash the dishes together. Quite practical, in fact.

I actually like this. And I think they did this on purpose. Maybe because of the view or maybe because it's easier to open the window. Anyway I have seen this in many upscale kitchen "studios" just to make the room more interesting.

I don't see the problem with this - they have plenty of room for it, and it makes the sink usable by two people at once.

It is a double sink so could be used by two even if back against the wall.

Didn't they sink this through!??

I somehow suspect the dishwasher was a bit too wide, so rather than get a different dishwasher, they... shifted the cabinetry and sink.

This is actually quite nice. What’s so weird about it? It’s rather unique. I want it!

What did they do with the gap behind the sink?

Might be due to a remodel, perhaps. The area with the fridge may not have been part of the original kitchen (with a wall adjoining that sink, which was then in the corner of the room), and then they just decided it was too much trouble to move the plumbing? I dunno... just trying to make some sense of it.

I think the dishwasher is at fault. They wanted one and keep the original kitchen, and this was the only way.

Show us why there are no cabinets under the counter to the left.

C’mon guys! Look at the bench cut and how nice the sink and faucet have been fit into it! A masterpiece!

I just think it would be another thing to run into in the dark

At Least You Don't Have To Reach For It

I will admit I burst out in laughter.

The toilet paper also acts as d**k rests for people with...d***s

Genius if it was coming out the SIDE of the toilet seat!

This actually makes sense in an insane way

Because there was literally EVERYWHERE ELSE to put the tissue roll.

Someone had to custom make this right ?

I admit, it isn't a horrible idea, they had good intentions, but your legs would have to be spread apart pretty far...

Also, the location of the toilet itself looks odd...

Recommended for an all female household only! Sorry guys, but sometimes you all don't have great aim, sorry sorry sorry!

Dad, don't forget to raise the seat... PLEASE!
