The Art of Elspeth McLean

Meet artist Elspeth McLean, whose artistic style is (in her words) vibrant, loving, original and ethereal. Her works use a myriad of colourful dots and circles, the circle being the symbol of unity and infinity, with inspiration drawn from nature and cultures such as those of India, Mexico, Native Americans and Australian Aborigines. Although her works cover a multitude of themes and subjects, all in her distinctive unique style, she has become especially known for her painted mandala river stones. Mandalas are ritual designs used in Hindu and Buddhist for focus for meditation. They often feature circles and work on geometric design. Elspeth McLean’s painted stones are in great demand and usually sell as soon as she puts any on sale on her website at :

By the way, she grew up in Perth, sold her work at market stalls throughout Australia and now lives on Vancouver Island in Canada with her husband, children and animals.

Some examples of her work:

Elspeth’s river stones are collected from a dried up river bed. Hence there are no ecological issues or interference with salmon spawning grounds. Here are examples of her painted river stones:

  2. Dot painting has very deep and symbolic meaning to indigenous Australians. This is blatant cultural appropriation.
