"What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset."
- Chief Crowfoot (c1821-1830 - 1890), last words
Crowfoot was a chief of the Siksika First nation who participated in at least 19 battles and sustained numerous injuries. Nontheless he saw that the way forward was in peace instead of tribal warfare. He was also instrumental in allowing the Canadian pacific Railroad through Blackfoot territory. He refused to participate in the North-West Rebellion of 1885 and died in 1890 of tuberculosis. Renowned as a warriior and peacemaker, his funeral was attended by 800 of his tribe and government dignataries.
